Medela is not “the only game in town” and their arrogance in deliberate WHO Code violation should speak volumes of their priorities (profits)!
I support ILCA and suggest that this is an opportunity to explore competitors (ie Ameda) who also offer quality products.

I actually just posted on this topic and how, because of these stories, the only thing some people have ever heard about breastfeeding is that it’s some wonder diet (esp. thanks to all the celebrity stuff). Nothing about the health and mothering aspects, the critical bonding, the generally awesome (and hard won) experience. I have actually had people (e.g., MIL) imply I breastfed my kids beyond the “socially acceptable” year to burn calories. It’s ridiculous. The hype is not only misleading, it brings breastfeeding down to the level of some fad diet. I posted after reading a recent story about Heidi Klum, who finally put her foot down to that line of questioning about breastfeeding her new baby. Finally someone in the media calling BS on the overblown hype.

This kind of horrifies me. Having had a cesarean where I did not meet my baby until he was many hours old, I think already feel some permanent damage that early separation caused us. And man – if I’d gotten the wrong baby? I don’t know what kind of medication I’d need to be on right now. I don’t think I’d be suing over the breastfeeding – but I’d be filing a complaint with the state medical board, for sure. Clearly someone over there isn’t doing their job right. A baby switch is a pretty darn big deal in my book.

Yeah. I’d be pretty horrified if I were that mother. Not knowing who your own baby is seems like a highly traumatic thing to me.

@Alex, I completely agree that she has the right to choose *not* to breastfeed someone else’s baby. But in filing this lawsuit, she will have to show that she was damaged by breastfeeding this child (assuming that the Chicago paper’s characterization of her claim is correct). She will have to do more than prove she did something she would not have chosen to do.

If the medical mistake had been that he was given the wrong medicine, she would have to show that she was damaged by that in a way that can be quantified and proven. Mistakes in and of themselves do not lead to money damage awards.

I can see why she´s sueing, it was a complete violation of her body. Not by the baby, of course, but by the medical system that was responsible for her, her baby, the other mom and other baby. Every BODY deserves the respect. As a personal choice I´ve breastfed other mom´s babies in two occasion because that was my choice. It is not a matter of breastfeeding the wrong baby, it is about my body, my rights, my choices.

I absolutely see her being upset, worried, and frustrated. And I would have been terrified about my own child’s safety and welfare. But damaged for nursing another baby once? Eh, not a big deal.

I could maybe see the other mom wanting to sue because her baby was taken to someone else for breastfeeding, but this is sort of ridiculous.
