Beautiful! I know it is Honore Daumier, right? He has another great breastfeeding painting: http://faculty.evansville.edu/rl29/art105/img/daumier_thirdclass.jpg

Even the babies look strong!! Something tells me if she had three breasts the one at her feet wouldn’t be reading. He looks like he’s waiting for his turn. What’s the story behind this painting? Gripping the flag and in that “throne”.

I don’t have the answer but I have inklings to explain it. Have you read The History of Breastfeeding by Marilyn Yalom? In it she covers a lot about breastfeeding art. Depending on the age of the painting and the country of origin, I know breastfeeding was often depicted in art to encourage patriotism. In some eras men were sometimes shown breastfeeding. I don’t remember why but it was something about strength – notice the muscles, notice the tandem nursing and the confidence exuded. Anyway, I’m not much of an art curator and I wish I could remember more of the details to tell you but definitely check out the book if you want to learn more. I loved it!

I’d guess the three children represent Libery, Equality and Fraternity?
This is such a strong painting. It is visually stimulating for everyone. I love the facial expression of the mother– so confident, as we all should be. Kudos.
