There are 2 more.

The nightmares probably last a long time. Maybe longer. My youngest (9 yrs old) awoke from a "bad dream" (he explicitly denied it "nightmare" status) yesterday. Dream Content (as Freud would say): Nickelodeon cancelled SpongeBob Squarepants. Now personally, I would consider that not only a terrible business decision by the network, but a bona fide NACHTMARE! But the little guy was quite mature about it. He knows I'd buy the DVDs.

You have done a remarkable job raising your son to achieve what every parent wants - independence, curiosity, intelligence and confidence. Those skills will aid him should he ever have to face a problem. As much as we want to, we can't protect our children (even when they are adults) from everything. You have successfully given him a childhood that allowed him to develop the skills to thrive and survive.

The other side of this Janus coin is that by protecting the too-short phase of childhood from evil, you gave your son the chance to gradually learn about the darker side of humanity... from a distance. Nightmares such as these are haunting, following a parent through days and sometimes years. But they can serve a positive purpose by reminding us of the importance of forewarning our children of dangerous paths and people.
